You might have seen the HTTP and HTTPS before any link when visiting the internet, Which keeps you bothered, and you ask yourself why they are there, what's the essence, and what's the difference.

What Is HTTP?

The HTTP is Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It uses port number 80. HTTP offers a set of standards and rules which indicate how any information can be transmitted on the World Wide Web. In addition, it provides rules for web browsers application & servers to communicate.

HTTP is an application layer network built on TCP protocol. HTTP uses Hypertext structured text which establishes the link between endpoint with text. It is widely known as "stateless protocol", as each data is executed separately, without the reference of the previous run command.

What Is HTTPS?

The HTTPS is Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. It uses port number 443. The HTTP protocol does not provide any security means for the data transmitted, while HTTPS ensures the security of the data. HTTPS is a secure version of the HTTP protocol because it allows transferring the of data in an encrypted form.

The use of HTTPS protocol is mainly where we need to enter sensitive information like bank account details. In modern browsers application such as firefox and chrome, both protocols, i.e., HTTP and HTTPS, is indicated differently. To provide security, HTTPS uses an encryption protocol layer formally as Transport Layer Security(TLS), and officially, it is regarded as a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This protocol uses an asymmetric public key mechanism, an encryption format that keeps your data safe during transmission.

Difference Between HTTP VS HTTPS

When you are creating a website, you will be using both HTTP and HTTPS. HTTP means a request to a specific online location where your business has its website address. HTTPS is an acronym for "HTTP Secure". When the user accesses such a site, the data is encrypted. Hence, secure access to the web page's content or domain name (more specifically) is called.

The fundamental difference between HTTPS and HTTP is the SSL/TLS certificate. The HTTPS protocol is a proacted version of the HTTP protocol with an additional security feature. This additional security feature is essential for websites that transmit sensitive data such as credit card information.

HTTP & HTTPS: Which One Is Better for My Site?

Technically, no answer is correct for this; HTTP and HTTPS are two very similar protocols developed to serve different purposes. Both can send data over the internet and secure communication by encrypting the information. But when we set up our website and create a URL, we select HTTP over HTTPS in most cases. This means that we don't have to worry about securing sensitive information. So should you always use HTTP for your website? However, if the website contains sensitive information like usernames, passwords, or credit card details, using an unencrypted HTTP protocol can posses serious security risks. Since the information is visible to anyone, data breaches, sensitive information exposure, and identity theft become serious concerns. To protect sensitive information from being stolen, websites use SSL/TLS certificates to create a secure connection channel between web servers and browsers, protecting the transmission of data requests and responses.

When it comes to building value, credibility and trust with your audience, HTTPS is the better option. A report shows almost 40% of users look for the padlock icon when they visit a site. Thus, HTTPS offers such merit, whether you run an e-commerce website, a business site, or a personal site. With better protection against data leaks and breaches, a site using SSL is more authoritative and credible. This also leads to lower bounce rates and higher browsing times. The more time the end user spends on a website, the more lead generation results.
